That is often a concern. Some people are better at compartmentalizing that stuff than others.

I guess my overall point is that whether it's sales goals or artistic goals, it's extraordinarily helpful to remind yourself what you're trying to strive for. My current goal is “finish up the goddamn next disc by september” which is helping keep me on target and not get distracted.

It's so easy to lose sight of a goal with all the “success tips” out there. I also feel it's important to re-ask yourself these questions every year or so. Thanks to re-asking myself, I now know that I'm simply happy writing some good music and sharing it with people. This really put “success” in perspective for me, and I'm much happier for it.

I have to say I think personally I've achieved what I originally wanted to achieve which was to be an artist that not many people know but are introduced to by other music fans. And I think I've done that.

I think working to sales based targets is a dangerous dangerous thing for creativity. It's one reason I do pretty much no marketing. I worry that it will make its way into the music and all of a sudden I'll start writing for popularity rather than creativity.
